Mi’kmaw Ecological Knowledge Studies (MEKS)

The CMM conducts Mi’kmaq Ecological Knowledge Studies (MEKS). A MEKS is a study of historic and current Mi’kmaq land and resource use. An evaluation is completed to determine any impacts a potential project may have on the use of that land. Information obtained from personal interviews and land mapping aids in protection and management of areas of Mi’kmaq interest. Such areas include traditional hunting and harvesting areas in Nova Scotia. The MEK Studies are performed by the Environmental Services Manager. The Environmental Services Manager also does Phase I Environmental Assessments, traditional and medicinal plant studies, as well as being involved with energy efficiency and energy usage reduction projects.
