GIS

The GIS Technician is responsible for developing and maintaining a GIS database for use in mapping the geographic data in the Bay of Fundy Watershed. This database is of importance to MCG for a number of reasons, however, the primary objective for MCG is to collect as much Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge with respect to sites traditionally used for fishing practices and conservation. Having this data on file will help shape future SAR, conservation and management projects for years to come as it will hold a certain amount of cultural significance for our First Nation Communities.

The GIS Technician has also been the project leads on the HSP and NS Adopt a Stream– Barriers to Migration in the Stewiacke watershed: Culvert assessment / remediation (150 Culverts assessed and five remediation’s). The GIS Technician’s expertise in mapping has made it possible for the development of an online interactive map that will allow the user to put in the culvert data and determine if it meets the criteria as a fish passage.  This web based tool will allow not only our partners to view the MCG data on culverts but also use the tool to determine if sites they assess are barriers to migration. This tool will also be used in classrooms as part of the MCG Education materials. This project will be completed by March 31, 2015.
